English as a Second Language (ESL)

ESL Studies offers support for students whose first language is not English.

Services

Any student whose first language is not English should meet with: Candace Justice (Morristown, Greeneville/Greene County, and Claiborne County) or Samantha Isasi (Sevier County) to schedule any of the following services.

ESL Compass Testing

ESL students who take the Compass exam for LS placement may request the ESL version of the test. While the test is administered in English, it offers additional assistance in the form of an audio component for testing instructions.

ESL Advising

Students can receive specialized advising help by scheduling an appointment. This help includes guiding ESL students in the appropriate courses to take and scheduling additional help in the form of tutoring and other resources.

ESL Tutoring
by appointment only; not available on all campuses

ESL students can schedule to meet with a peer tutor who can help them with language sensitive issues. Tutoring can include essay assistance, additional help with reading problems, language practice, and additional resources for language improvement, just to name a few.

ESL Course New!
ESL 0801 | English as a Second Language (3 credits)

This non-credit course is designed for ESL students who are seeking to improve their English skills and addresses the following language acquisition skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and grammar. The course is a general survey intended to help students improve the communication skills needed to be successful in college and is appropriate for all non-native English speakers. The course is conducted in English.

Prerequisite(s):None.

Offered : Fall

Online Resources

Students who want to improve their language skills have free access to an online language program called Tell Me More. The software first tests the student to determine language level. After testing, the student may practice language within his or her major. Also, the student may choose to practice language by category: grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, writing, or culture and civilization.
