Honors Program
The Honors Program at Walters State provides students with opportunities to gain the highest level of academic challenge and quality leadership from dedicated faculty who share a commitment to excellence in teaching and service.
The program is designed for students who have an outstanding academic record, who are academically motivated and desire an intellectual challenge. Students who are accepted into the Honors Program will take select honors courses. These courses are a part of any major available at the college. Students also participate in an honors seminar for three semesters. The Tennessee Board of Regents has approved this program as a "bona fide honors program"; therefore, out-of-state students formally accepted into the honors program will be eligible for the waiving of out-of-state tuition.
Graduates of the honors program will qualify for an "honors diploma."
Acceptance To The Honors Program
To be accepted and to maintain good standing in the program, a student must have an ACT composite score of 24 (scores must be less than 3 years old) and complete the honors core program.
Students who are 21 years of age or older without an ACT composite score of 24 may submit both a score of 68 or above on the writing portion and a 50 or above on the algebra portion of the Computer Placement Assessment and Support System (COMPASS) in place of the ACT.
After one or more semesters at Walters State, a student with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in 12 or more college-level hours may apply.
Transfer students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in 12 or more college-level hours or an ACT composite score of 24 (score must be less than 3 years old) may also apply.
Retention Requirements
Students must successfully complete a total of 18 honors credits and maintain a 3.25 cumulative grade point average per year without earning lower than a 2.8 GPA in any one term. Grades are monitored after each term.
