David SheltonDavid Shelton
Head Coach

Coach David Shelton came to Walters State in the 2003. Prior to Walters State, he served as an assistant at East Tennessee State University for five years, where he earned a masters degree in business administration.

Coach Shelton is a native of Erwin, Tenn. and played collegiate baseball at Milligan College, where he is among the career leaders in many offensive categories. At Milligan, Shelton earned degrees in business administration and computer science.

Coach Shelton spent 10 seasons as the recruiting coordinator at Walters State, working under the legendary Ken Campbell. During his tenure as assistant, the Senators compiled a record of 471 – 118, for a .800 winning percentage, and made 4 trips to the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. The Senators won the national championship in 2006. Coach Shelton recruited and coached 50 players who were drafted by major league baseball teams. Since 2006, Coach Shelton has also served as an associate scout for the Atlanta Braves, with 16 former Senators having signed with the Braves.

Coach Shelton became head coach at Walters State in 2014. That year, the Senators compiled a 43-18 record. Fourteen players signed with four-year schools, including 11 Division I signees. Four players were also selected in the MLB draft, including second-round pick Brent Honeywell to the Tampa Bay Rays and fourth-round pick Brett Martin to the Texas Rangers.

Coach Shelton is married to the former Stefanie Reynolds and they have one son, Dalton, and one daughter, Madison.

 Jarrod Payne
Assistant Coach

Jarrod Payne is in his first year with Walters State. His responsibilities include working with catchers, as well as assisting with infielders, hitters and recruiting. He will also be in charge of overseeing the academic achievement of baseball student athletes.

Prior to Walters State, Payne served as an assistant coach at Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tenn. Payne worked with the Toppers hitters, infielders, and catchers. He helped lead the 2014 Toppers to a 30-9 record while getting as high as No. 8 in the TBCA state polls. Payne's previous coaching experience includes assembling and coaching a summer travel team, The Tri-Cities Bombers. While coaching the Bombers, Payne helped 40 players earn College Scholarships.

Payne graduated from King University in December of 2013 with a bachelor's degree in secondary mathematics education. While at King, he played infield for the Tornadoes and posted a .305 career batting average. He began his college career at Spartanburg Methodist College.

Payne's father, Gill, is a former high school and college head coach. He spent eight years as the head coach at Brevard (N.C.) College.

 Sean Robinson
Pitching Coach

Sean Robinson joined Walters State in 2014 as pitching coach. He was a volunteer coach at
Carson- Newman University. A native of Knoxville, Tenn., Coach Robinson attended Central High School where he pitched and played infield. He attended Milligan College where he was a starter and a reliever for 4 years.

Under Coach Robinson's guidance in his first season here, four pitchers were selected in the major league baseball draft. The Senators pitching staff also set a school record with 478 strikeouts, breaking the previous mark of 267 set by the 2008 Senator Squad.

Coach Robinson graduated from Milligan College in 2013 with a bachelor's of science degree in business administration and a minor in coaching. He is scheduled to graduate with his MBA from Milligan College in December, 2014.

 Dan Skirka
Recruiting Coordinator

Dan Skirka joined Walters State after spending the previous five seasons as an assistant coach at Murray State (KY) University. He previously coached at Ouachita Baptist University and Grand Rapids Community College. A native of Union City, Mich., Coach Skirka played his college ball at Kellogg Community college and Grand Valley State University. A four-year starter at shortstop, Coach Skirka was named team captain, all-conference, all-region and Male Scholar Athlete of the Year both at KCC and GVSU. He was also a part of three conference championship teams.

In his first season at Murray State, Coach Skirka helped guide an offense that set new school records for hits, runs scored, doubles, RBIs and total bases, while also having the fifth-best batting average in school history. Also, during his tenure at Murray State, Skirka had two freshmen All-Americans, an OVC Pitcher of the Year and an OVC Player of the Year.

During the 2009 season as an assistant coach at Ouachita Baptist, he worked mainly with hitters and outfielders. Under his guidance, the Tigers went 37-20 and were paced by the Gulf South West Division Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year.

Coach Skirka spent the 2008 season as an assistant coach at GRCC. He worked with the hitters, infielders and outfielders, and helped the Raiders to the NJCAA Division II World Series.

He graduated magna cum laude from Grand Valley State with a bachelor's degree in group social studies. He completed his master's degree in human development and leadership from Murray State in 2010.

He is married to the former Kelsey Hanson.

Joey SeaverJoey Seaver
Assistant Coach

Joey Seaver has been an Assistant Coach at Walters State since 1999 and has spent 14 years specifically as a Ptiching Coach. He previously coached pitchers at Carson-Newman College for 10 years and pitched professionally in the minor leagues for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Coach Seaver played his college years at Walters State and the University of Tennessee. He was drafted 4 times during his college career. During his tenure at Walters State, 31 pitchers have been drafted by Major League Baseball.

In 2006, Coach Seaver coached a pitching staff that established school records for wins (61) and strikeouts (465) in a season. During the summer of 2006, Coach Seaver was hired by the Boston Red Sox to serve as the pitching coach for their Single A club in Lowell, Massachusetts.
