The Associate of Arts degree in English at Walters State Community College is designed to fulfill the freshman and sophomore level course requirements of a bachelor’s degree; however, the curriculum is not specific to a particular college or university.  A student will need to consult a WSCC faculty advisor or an advisor at the intended transfer institution to determine individual course requirements for the four-year school.  The link to the Humanities Division at WSCC is: http://www.ws.edu/humanities/default.asp

The purpose of the English discipline is to teach students to think critically, write effectively, and develop sensibilities to the literary tradition of the Western World through offerings in composition and literature.  The discipline emphasizes language skills and the literary arts. 

Many occupations require an individual with excellent communication skills that include the ability to process information and present it to others clearly and concisely.  An English major may be employed in various fields related to personal interests.  The following list is a representative sample of careers that may be considered by students who pursue a major in English; many of these career fields may require completing a baccalaureate degree.

Salary Information:

 

Median annual earnings for salaried writers and authors were $42,790 in 2002. The middle 50 percent earned between $29,150 and $58,930. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $21,320, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $85,140. Median annual earnings were $54,520 in advertising and related services and $33,550 in newspaper, periodical, book, and directory publishers.
