Career and Major Information:

Walters State's two-year concentration in Office Administration prepares students for administrative office positions which require abilities in researching and compiling data, composing internal and external communications, preparing mailable documents via computer, desktop publishing, managing records electronically and manually, and utilizing managerial skills. Other administrative support duties may include typing various documents, scheduling appointments, proofreading, maintaining personnel files, and reception.  Technology has changed some of the work that secretaries do including expanding some expectations such as research and training, but the primary responsibility of performing an office’s administrative tasks remains largely the same. Positions may be highly specialized such as legal secretary or medical secretary.

Jobs may be found in every type of organization including business, industry, government, healthcare, and education.

Many administrative assistants gain entry level employment with only high school diplomas, but with increasing reliance on technology and computer software programs, more employers are requiring a minimum of an associates degree.  Slowed growth is expected through 2012.

Earnings:

The Tennessee Career Information Delivery System website lists the salary range for a beginning-level position in this field in Tennessee as $15,540 to $18,170 annually.  With experience, the range increases to $22,510 to $33,470.  The national average is higher by about $2,000 to $4,000 per year with experience.  Salary figures quoted are based on national figures.
