Federal Work Study Program (FWS)
Campus Based Aid
The Federal Work-Study Program provides jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses.
Application:
- FAFSA (yearly)
- Federal Work Study Application (yearly)
Award: Based on unmet need and job availability
Eligibility:
- Unmet need
- Enrolled at least half-time (6 hours)
- Meeting SAP (Satisfactory Academic Progress)
- Cannot exceed COA (Cost of Attendance)
- Not in default of student loan or owe a federal repayment
The Federal Work Study Program provides funds that are earned through part-time employment to assist students in financing the costs of postsecondary education.
To qualify, students must:
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If required, Verification must be completed before eligibility for FWS can be determined.
- Complete the Federal Work Study Application. The application is also available in the WSCC Financial Aid Office.
Job placement is coordinated through the WSCC Financial Aid Office and is contingent on the availability of a position on campus.
Eligible students will be contacted by phone for a job placement interview as positions become available. Eligibility is based on a student's "unmet need". Unmet need is determined by subtracting the student's Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and financial aid awards from the college's established Cost of Attendance (COA). Thus, all other aid must be applied to the student's account before eligibility for the FWS program can be determined.
Generally, the process for placing eligible students will begin around the first part of September for the fall semester and the latter part of January for the spring semester.
Students are paid an hourly wage, and work approximately 10-20 hours per week. Currently students are paid on the last working day of the month for hours accumulated in the previous month. When practical, payment is direct deposited into either the student's checking or savings account.
