The Massenkoff Russian Folk Festival will visit the Walters State Community College Sevier and Morristown campuses on Tuesday, Feb. 5. All performances are free and open to the public. The Sevier County Campus performance begins in room 104 of the Connor-Short Center. The Morristown Campus performance begins at 7 p.m. in the theatre of the Judge William H. Inman Humanities Complex.
The performance features lead singer Nikolai Massenkoff accompanied by a Balalaika Ensemble and a Russian Folk Ballet. The group has performed throughout the world and was an invited performer at the first International Festival of Russian Song in Moscow in 2007. He has also performed at over 15 symphonies and at Carnegie Hall.
Massenkoff and company provide more than a concert. Their performances share a celebration of Russian culture, featuring different music and several costume changes. The last time he visited Walters State, many students even came away speaking a little Russian.
The singer was actually born in a “White Russian” community in China. At the age of 12, his family moved to another community of White Russians in San Francisco. His heritage includes Russian, Ukrainian and Gypsy.
This appearance is sponsored by Global Connections, a student initiative to enhance opportunities for international learning at the college. Sample the Massenkoff Russian Folk Festival at www.nikolaimassenkoff.us or on YouTube.
