Walters State Community College invites the public to a free performance of “Homeland: A Salute to America the Beautiful” April 25 at the Sevier County Campus. The concert begins at 7 p.m. in the Conner-Short Center. Admission is free.
The concert features the show choir Backbeat with a special appearance by the women’s chamber ensemble. “Homeland” is directed by Pedro Tomas with Ken Leach as musical director and Charlie Rule as sound engineer.
The two-act show opens with the national anthem and then spotlights a traditional spiritual and a few songs from the 21st century. The second act concentrates on patriotic songs taken from over 200 years of American music. Selections range from the light-hearted “Bill Bailey” and “I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy” to a moving arrangement of “We Shall Overcome” and “Lean on Me.” The evening wraps up with “God Bless the USA.”
Members of Backbeat are Haylee Haggard, Travis Hoop, Emily Hutsell, Samantha Maher, Bailey Miles, Christina Wendt, Sara Olford, Lori Sharp, Autumn Shorter and Tiffany VanShaick. Featured musicians are Doug Rinoldo, Stuart Weed, Garrit Tillman and Leach.
