Encore and Walters State’s music and theatre department will bring the musical “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” to the Claiborne County Campus and the Sevier County Campus in March.
A March 9 performance is planned for 2 p.m. in the auditorium of the Claiborne County Campus at 2 p.m. March 9. A March 8 performance is planned at 2 p.m. in the Conner-Short Center on the Sevier County Campus.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for students.
The production is a hilarious and heartfelt musical comedy that follows six young people in the throes of puberty as they vie for top honors in the title contest, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves.
“’Spelling Bee’ is a very funny musical that is also very moving, as audience members root for their favorite characters to win the Bee. It’s also about that awkward time in our lives when we aren’t adults and we aren’t children and everything is just so important,” said Drew Ogle, Encore’s managing director who is also serving as stage director for this production.
The play has several unique twists. At each performance, audience members are recruited to participate in the Spelling Bee with the cast.
Corporate sponsors for the play are Brewer and Terry, Attorneys at Law.
