Athletics Wing Honors Late Charles R. Terry
April 16, 2013

Walters State Community College paid tribute to the late attorney Charles R. Terry by naming the college’s athletics wing in his honor. Terry was a long-time supporter of the college and Senators athletics.
“Charlie genuinely cared about the success of our student athletes, not just on the court or field but in life,” said Dr. Wade B. McCamey, president of Walters State, during a naming ceremony on Monday at the college’s Morristown campus.
“Today, we honor Charlie’s support, leadership and guidance. It is with great pleasure that I hereby dedicate the athletics wing as the Charles R. “Charlie” Terry Athletics Wing,” McCamey also said.
The athletics wing is located in the Dr. Jack E. Campbell College Center on the Morristown campus. The wing houses coaches’ offices and locker rooms.

In addition to providing legal counsel and serving as president of the Walters State Foundation, Terry was one of the Senators biggest fans and supporters. He attended most home and many away games, contributed to the Senators athletics fund and volunteered his personal time in support of the college’s student athletes. He and his wife, Florence, also held cookouts and banquets for the athletes and their coaches.
Shortly after Terry passed away in 2009, Florence, and their children, Denise Terry Stapleton, Chuck Terry and F. Braxton (Brack) Terry, established the Charles R. Terry Endowment at the college. Earnings from the endowment provide financial assistance to student athletes based on character and work ethic.
Terry had a successful 51-year career practicing law. He served as president of the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association; president of the Tennessee Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates and lectured for the Association of Trial Lawyers of America at Harvard University. He was also active in the Tennessee walking horse community.
