Who Needs Testing?
Students Under 21
- Prospective Walters State students under 21 years-of-age must have ACT or SAT scores with the exception of prospective students with GED diplomas. GED graduates, under 21, may choose either the ACT or COMPASS.
Students Over 21
- Prospective Walters State students that are required to take COMPASS are:
Prospective students over 21 years-of-age that are degree seeking and have never attended college or - Transfer students that have not completed college level English and/or Algebra.
Types of Tests
GED
The General Development Test (GED) for a High School Equivalency Diploma is administered through the Counseling and Testing Department. Testing dates are established on a yearly basis and a reservation is required. To schedule an appointment call Carolyn Burnett 423/585-6804. There is a $65 fee for testing and $13.00 re-test fee for each retest administered.
COMPASS
The COMPASS placement test is designed for degree seeking students and students seeking admission to other selected programs. The assessment is for those under 21 years of age who wish to improve placement based on of ACT scores results, to anyone who holds a GED certificate, and for those over 21 years of age. For more specific assessment questions, please call the Counseling and Testing Office, at 423.585.6800. To schedule an appointment call the Counseling Office secretary. There is no fee for the Compass unless you are challenging your placement based on ACT scores.
ACT Residual Testing
The American College Testing Residual examination (ACT) is for students who have applied, been admitted or are enrolled at Walters State Community College and are unable to attend a national test date. Resulting scores will be reported to and used solely by WSCC. In order to take the Residual ACT, you must not have taken the examination during the past sixty (60) days prior to testing. To schedule an appointment call the Counseling Office at 423/585-6806. A fee of forty dollars ($40.00) will be charged for testing.
Students eligible for Tennessee Lottery Scholarship monies must have national ACT scores.Contact the Counseling and Testing Office at 423.585.6800. The fee is $45
College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
The CLEP program is a computer-based testing program designed to offer Walters State Community College students an opportunity to receive college credit in thirty-four (34) general education courses. There is a one hundred and two dollar ($107.00) fee required for each test administered to students. Contact the Office of Counseling and Testing at 865.774.5812 for additional information.
Regents On-Line Degree Program (RODP)
The RODP program is a Tennessee Board of Regents program designed to offer students an opportunity to complete academic coursework through the Internet system. Walters State Community College's Counseling and Testing office provides testing proctors for students enrolled in the RODP program. Students needing a testing proctor must contact the Counseling and Testing office to schedule a testing proctor (423/585-6800).

Proficiency Profile
The Proficiency Profile test is a measure of college-level reading, mathematics, writing, and critical thinking in the context of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The MAPP test is designed for colleges and universities to assess their general education outcomes, so they may improve the quality of instruction and learning. It focuses on the academic skills developed through general education courses, rather than on the knowledge acquired about the subjects taught in these courses.
The Proficiency Profile is a graduation requirement.
Evolve Reach (HESI) Admission Assessment Exam (A2)
The Evolve Reach (HESI) Admission Assessment Exam (A2) is a computer based test consisting
of a number of separate modules. The modules used by Walters State County Community
College Nursing Program, Physical Therapy Assistant Program, and the Respiratory Care Program include: Math Skills, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary and Learning Style. Although the examination is not a requirement, it is strongly advised that is be taken by those wishing to apply for these programs.
